Chapter Thirteen

After fixing lunch for herself and Ella, Lottie toyed with the idea of paying a visit to Extreme Quests to offer her help. She always avoided their kitchen at all costs as it sent her hygiene monsters into a whirlwind of turmoil, but she didn’t mind doing a bit of admin, like filing or sending out invoices and marketing material, something Matt and Ethan never had time to do.

She pulled on her hoodie, collected her car keys and was heading towards the Waddling Duck’s car park where her Mini Cooper was parked, when Ella started to bark and Lottie saw Kit sprinting towards her, his jacket flying in the air like a pair of butterfly wings. Kit never ran for anything other than an emergency and her heart performed a painful somersault. What had happened? Had the police made an arrest?

‘Hi, Kit.’

‘Oh, Lottie, I’m glad I caught you. Are you busy?’

‘I was just on my way over to EQ.’

‘To take part in a quad bike safari?’

‘What? No, I—’

‘A session on the climbing wall?’

‘No! Neither of those things. What’s the emergency?’

‘Emergency?’

Kit looked over his shoulder in confusion, his silver magnifying glass swinging like a pendulum across his chest. Lottie noticed he was also wearing an oversized ring, which she suspected was some kind of covert camera, but she didn’t want to get into that at the moment.

‘I thought… Never mind. Why are you here?’

‘I wondered if you’d like to come with me to meet Malcolm.’

Lottie wrinkled her forehead. ‘Who’s Malcolm?’

‘Mrs Hailsham’s husband? Remember? I graciously agreed to go over to her house on Tuesday afternoon so you and Hazel could interrogate Harriet.’

‘We didn’t interrogate her! We asked her a few questions, that’s all.’

‘Okay, interviewed her then. Anyway, after Delia had showed me around her quite lovely garden, she made a pot of jasmine tea and arranged a few of these cute green biscuits that tasted like grass – I won’t be asking her for that recipe – on a fancy plate and told me to take them to the shed at the bottom of the garden. Oh my God, Hazel was right. It’s just like an Aladdin’s cave! I didn’t know where to look first, and I swear I saw a golden genie’s lamp on one of the Welsh dressers.’

‘Really?’

‘Yes! Anyway, when I got over the shock, I asked him if he could repair my old metal detector and he had it working within five minutes flat. The guy is a repair-shop genius. Did you know he’s a real-life inventor? He told me that he’s patented over a hundred different ideas, and he showed me the binder he keeps them all in. Unfortunately, none of them were suitable to our specific needs, but he said he’d be willing to give my automatic casting net a whirl if I could source the right type of rope.’

‘Sounds like you had a great visit.’

‘It was so good that I’m paying him a return visit and you’re coming with me.’
